Spot Cleaning First
Always try spot cleaning before a full wash
Baby spit up on the carrier? Spot clean with a soft cloth and warm water, then hang to dry. Frequent full washing increases wear over time β spot cleaning is always the gentler, preferred option.
Machine Washing Instructions
When a full wash is necessary, follow these steps:
Recommended Detergents
Choose a low-scent or fragrance-free detergent with no optical brighteners and no enzymes. These options work well:
Nature Clean Liquid
Fragrance-free, plant-based, enzyme-free. Widely available in Canada.
Seventh Generation Free & Clear
No dyes, fragrances, or optical brighteners. Easy to find at most grocery stores.
ECOS Free & Clear
Plant-powered formula, hypoallergenic, no synthetic fragrances.
Ecover
Plant-based and biodegradable. Gentle on fabrics and baby skin.
What to Avoid
Never use these on your carrier
- Fabric softener β coats fibres and reduces breathability
- Bleach or bleach-based products β damages fabric and hardware
- Detergents with optical brighteners or enzymes β breaks down natural fibres over time
- Tumble dryer β heat warps buckles and shrinks fabric
- Dry cleaning β chemical solvents can damage the carrier
Wool requires special handling
For a wool or wool-blend carrier, the key is minimising heat, agitation, and friction. Wool can felt β shrink and stiffen permanently β if handled incorrectly, which makes the carrier unsafe to use. Follow these steps carefully.
Wool is naturally antibacterial β wash less often
Wool has natural antibacterial properties, so you usually don't need to wash it frequently. Spot clean whenever possible, and save a full wash for when it's truly needed.

Removing Water & Drying
What to Avoid with Wool
These will permanently damage wool β no exceptions
- Washing machine β the agitation cycle will felt the wool instantly
- Tumble dryer β heat and tumbling together cause rapid, irreversible felting
- Hot or cold water (temperature shocks) β always keep water lukewarm throughout
- Scrubbing or wringing β friction is the enemy of wool fibres
- Hanging when wet β wet wool stretches under its own weight
- Fabric softener β coats the fibres and reduces performance
