Care Instructions for Your Onbuhimo
How to Wash an Onbuhimo
Most Onbuhimos come ready-to-wear, but you'll find that first use much more enjoyable after a wash and dry — it also helps set the weave, which matters especially with airier weaves.
Spot Cleaning
Spot clean first when possible.
Baby spit up on the carrier? Reach for a soft cloth and warm water before running a full machine wash. Spot cleaning is gentler on the fabric and keeps your Onbuhimo looking great for longer.

Ironing
Check the care tag before ironing.
Most Onbuhimos can be ironed on medium heat. Ironing helps soften the fabric and can improve the hand feel of your carrier over time.
Detergent
Use a gentle, low or no scent liquid detergent with no optical brighteners. If the label doesn't specifically say "no optical brighteners" — it has them.
Nature Clean Liquid
Fragrance-free, plant-based, enzyme-free.
Seventh Generation Liquid
No dyes, fragrances, or optical brighteners.
ECOS Free & Clear
Plant-powered, hypoallergenic. US-based option.
Ecover
Plant-based and biodegradable. Gentle on fabrics.
Not sure about your detergent?
Use ½ cup of plain white vinegar instead — add some to the main wash and some to the fabric softener compartment. It's a safe, effective alternative that also prevents build-up.
What to Avoid
Do not use
- Fabric softener — coats fibres and reduces breathability
- Bleach or bleach-based products — damages fabric and weakens fibres
- Detergents with optical brighteners — breaks down fibres over time
